Initial Ideas

I am going to look at how video games have changed in the last twenty to thirty years and try to show how the graphics and the games have improved and developed. I will also compare what aims video games used to have and what consumers expect from games today; as I think that people used to play it for the entertainment value rather than the rewards gained from them today, such as achievements and exclusive items. I want to create artistic responses and add my own style and allow a gaming influence. I think that this topic of will allow me to create some memorable artwork as it is a topic that I enjoy very much and would be very keen to investigate further.

One of the artists that I would like to base my artwork around is Chuck Close. His style of creating large images from a collage of smaller shapes would work well. I think that this would be a very modern and creative way to produce artwork based around early video games as it will go well with the pixelated appearance. This could then be developed further into more images or possibly a large artist response.

Another artist that I want to look at is Gary J Lucken. He creates very vibrant artwork that is heavily influenced by video games. His images are very unique as they are very pixelated and only use bright, cartoon-like colours. His online portfolio is shown on his website ‘Army of Trolls’ and is designed in the same way as his artwork. This is a style of art that I find really interesting and I would like to create responses to.
